Diesel passes 200p a litre, a new high in the government's weekly figures

The government's weekly survey of pump prices put diesel at 200.04p a litre on Monday 12 October. That is the highest figure in the series, which goes back to June 2003. The previous high was 199.52p last week, and before that 199.22p on 4 July 2022. Diesel has now gone up for 13 weeks in a row, and a year ago, on 13 October 2025, it was 142.99p. Petrol was 175.28p, up from 134.81p a year ago, and still below its 2022 high of 191.55p. Fuel duty (a tax charged on every litre) is unchanged at 52.95p, and VAT is still 20%. The ONS says transport, particularly motor fuels, made the largest upward contribution to the rise in inflation in August.

Interview question of the week

Lenders say credit card defaults rose, but expect to make slightly more credit available next quarter. What would you check before deciding what that means?

say your answer out loud first

Show a strong answer

Separate three things first. What lenders reported: defaults on credit card loans increased, and less unsecured credit was available. What they expect: credit card defaults to increase again, and slightly more credit to be available. And what the survey is: lenders' own answers, summed up as net balances, and the Bank says expectations "should not be treated as a realised outturn". Then look at size and direction. The credit card default balance was 25.7, still an "increase" but down from 37.4 in the survey before. Then say what you would watch next: the Bank Rate (the Bank of England's main interest rate) decision on 5 November, and the next Credit Conditions Survey on 14 January 2027. A strong answer doesn't pretend one survey settles it. More defaults and less credit on offer went together this quarter, but the survey alone can't tell you why.

Interviewers like candidates who separate what happened from what is expected, and who know that a survey of lenders' answers is not the same as a count of what actually happened.
